Its subject matter is not exactly crowd pleasing or even pleasant-seeming from the way it’s advertised. Kidnapping Stella on the other hand is an obscure, low-budget German film that was barely reviewed or promoted, outside of Germany at the very least and maybe not even there (I couldn’t find much about the film on the German twitter account for example, besides the audience data announce). Netflix watchers were by this point accustomed to the company self-reporting (unconfirmed) data about its films and series, but these figures have almost always pertained to its most widely promoted works, such as its flagship series Stranger Things and La Casa de Papel, or Murder Mysteryand Bird Boxon the film side. In one of the more remarkable bits of Netflix self-promotion, the company announced via German twitter one day in August of 2019 that Kidnapping Stella had been seen by nearly 19 million Netflix accounts. Soon tensions are mounting between the kidnappers themselves as the clock ticks down for the ransom to arrive, while Stella simultaneously looks for ways to free herself. While the kidnappers seem thoroughly prepared for the attack, it is not long before complications start to arise, including a revelation about Stella’s relationship to one of the men. ![]() ![]() They then hold her hostage in an abandoned apartment while trying to shake her father down for ransom money. Recently released ex-cons Tom (Max von der Groeben) and Vic (Clemens Schick) kidnap the eponymous Stella (Jella Haase) in an empty Berlin parking lot.
